Morning Pages

Just over an hour into our hike the spring of Wild Horse Canyon announces herself. Birds refresh and catch up with the news of the wood. Some of their homes are 2,000 years older than Christ. Seated in a copse, I pull on my hoodie as sweat makes its way along my spine.

For a time the birds fall silent and the wind carries their messages westward. The juice of dried green mango refreshes. My companions snack above me on the hill. Birds resume their cacophony. A few words here, a sip of water, and we’re off again, climbing.
